Tribal Youth leaders collaborate at UNITY conference
The Cow Creek Tribal Youth Council attended the National UNITY (United National Indian Tribal Youth) Conference in Minneapolis in July, where they were able to learn from other young Tribal members across the country.
The conference includes elections, events, workshops and group sessions where young Tribal leaders can discuss, collaborate, and learn from one another on issues facing their Tribes and communities.
Some of the topics of interest included cultural revitalization, Indigenous language, education, and mental and social health.
Takelma language learner Elizabeth Bryant was also honored at the conference as a recipient of the 25 under 25 Award, celebrating her leadership role. The award is issued to those who, “embody UNITY’s core mission and exude living a balanced life developing their spiritual, mental, physical, and social well-being.”
Bryant also conducted a workshop called “Bringing Language and Culture into your Youth Council.” There were 50 attendees, and each of them were required to speak their native languages to introduce themselves. The workshop also included students playing a dice game that used Takelma numbers.
