Root Digging Stick Class
In March, the Cultural Resources Program hosted a class to make traditional root digging sticks, such as those used for digging up camas bulbs to use as a food source. Usually made from hard woods such as yew, myrtle wood, or mountain mahogany, the tough sticks are heat-treated in a fire to further strengthen them, before the outer bark is shaved off to make a smooth surface. Once the handle is combined with the shaft, it is polished with tallow to further enhance its durability.
