More Information on Peacemaking and the Tribal Court
As authorized by the Tribal Code, the Peacemaker is a non-judicial official appointed by Tribal Court to oversee Peacemaking proceedings and to guide the Peacemaking process in line with culturally-appropriate methods. In historical accounts, they are referenced as “xaawiisaa,” or “go-between.”
To date, nine Cow Creek Umpqua Tribal members have been appointed as Xaawiisaa (Peacemakers) after they completed the application process and attended the first training in 2023.
