Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe Purchases Vacant Properties in Downtown Roseburg
The Tribe has purchased two properties in downtown Roseburg that have been vacant for years: the former Rite Aid building on Southeast Jackson Street, and the nearby vacant lot on Southeast Rose Street that once held a Safeway. These two properties measure over an acre each, and have been unused since 2003.
In interviews with local news stations, Communications and Marketing Director Lindsay Campman spoke of the Tribe’s desire to “give back to the community and our neighbors.”
“We were focused on how can we contribute to the future of Roseburg with something that makes people want to spend time Downtown, shop at all the local businesses, and most importantly, feel a strong sense of community,” says Campman. “This location is front and center, right in the heart of Downtown. When we make a decision on what will transform that space, we want it to be the best contribution that it can be to creating a thriving Downtown Roseburg.”
There are no immediate plans for how to use the space, but Tribal leadership are considering many ideas, performing research, and considering the wants and needs of the community before acting.
“We are sentimental about this property, as is anyone who lives in Roseburg,” says Campman. “Many of our employees and Tribal members remember shopping with their parents at the Downtown grocery store when they were kids. So it’s emotional and exciting now to think that their children may also get to experience that revived property too.”
