Cow Creek and Oregon Tribes Open World Athletic Championships
Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribes participated in the opening ceremonies of the World Athletic Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene on Friday.
Cow Creek Tribal members Samantha Morris and Arrow Zimmerman carried the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians flag in the ceremony, as groups from all over the world paraded through the stadium to open the event.
Oregon Governor Kate Brown was also on hand to celebrate the globally recognized track and field event.
Nearly 2,000 track and field athletes from 192 teams will compete. This is the first time the World Athletic Championships has been held in the U.S. It runs from Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 24 in Eugene.
